Our Founder

In 1969, with $5,000 borrowed from friends and family, Stuart Lauterbach purchased Hunterdon Supply from a member of the Strober family. Back then it was a hardware store with a focus on roofing supplies. Recognizing the need for a plumbing store in the area, Stuart changed the main product line to plumbing and the name to Flemington Supply. With an infectious personality and a need to succeed, Stuart grew the business from a one man operation with a used station wagon into a viable business in the community. Through the 1980's the business grew and the staff of 10, including Stuart's wife Barbara and son Craig, were committed to giving the best service in the industry. By 1990, with that reputation, orders were getting bigger and coming in from around the state. Then, in 1991, Stuart's worst nightmare came to life; Flemington Supply burnt to the ground. The trucks were already loaded and made the next day's deliveries, but the future of the business was uncertain, except in the mind of the son, Craig. He knew there was no way Stuart or his devoted staff would let this be the end. So, from a rolodex salvaged from the wreckage came incredible support from vendors, customers, and even competitors. Business was done from the rubble and, while constructing a new building, Craig took over daily operations as Stuart continued to manage the finances. Craig's wife, Roslyn, joined the team and by 1995 recovery was apparent when Stuart suffered heart attacks that would force his retirement. Today, Craig and Roslyn, with some very long term employees and many new ones, continue to grow Flemington Supply on the foundation of outstanding customer service and the need to succeed.

Stuart passed away on February 14th, 2016, at the age of 86. He will be forever missed.
